Warrior Up:  Of Earth Day, Popes + Gifting

4/24/2013

It's been a pretty phenomenal couple of weeks!

My personal update is that I had to take a huge rest :) I have been so full and bursting of creative ideas that I just went with it!  I was a creation explosion!  It's been a significant burst; the last one was in the height of my burlesque sewing mania so I just enjoyed this burst and went with it.  Alas, creative explosions are not sustainable, especially when one neglects key elements of self-care as I did.  I started dropping my morning stretches and slowed down on the prep of yummy healthy food. Boo!  Not surprisingly my body went into protest mode and climaxed with a brutal lower back pain this past weekend.

Good learning! :)

That said I was still able to get out to a couple of amazing events this past weekend in honour of Earth Day. One of these was a summit and gala dinner graciously hosted by the Tsleil Waututh Nation.  It brought together an amazing convergence of intellectual, activist and spiritual elders to dialogue.  They shared wisdom, information and inspiration in the form of real-world stories.  Highlights included:
  • Paul Clements-Hunt reminding us that we have a duty to                "Free up our imaginations to explore what is possible to shift and grow" in terms of creating alternatives, particularly with respect to alternatives to oil.  He pointed to the example of the T'Sou-ke First Nation on Vancouver Island for their solar energy innovation.
  • Elizabeth May for general bad-assery and reminding me that was barely a couple hundred years ago that people thought slavery could not be abolished because the economy would collapse. #perspective

My highlights in doodle form capture the fierce warrior spirit in Tsleil Waututh elder Amy George's call for all people to #WarriorUp in our work to restore Mother Earth for future generations.  Miles Richardson of the Haida Nation also had amazing wisdom that touched my heart deeply about the need to go back to our cultural roots and listen to our elders.  I adore our elders.
Picture
All of this so resonates with Pope Francis' words which imbue me with immense hope that life is conspiring to bring tenderness to the fight and protection of our Mother Earth so much so that we innovate and restore her in the process as well.
Picture
“It means protecting all creation, the beauty of the created world,
as the Book of Genesis tells us and as St. Francis of Assisi showed us.

It means respecting each of God’s creatures and respecting the environment in which we live.
It means protecting people, showing loving concern for each & every person, especially children, the elderly, those in need, who are often the last we think about.”
- Pope Francis

So that spirit, instructed by the teaching of giving away the first thing you make and in honour of tender-warrior-hope-explosions of Earth Day 2013, I would like to give away and share my Pope Francis doodle.  I will make print copies of them shortly to share;  please email me / comment if you would like me to snail mail them to you (I adore snail mail)!  Alternatively, I am posting a PDF downloadable file here for printing and sharing as anyone wishes.  All I ask is that you credit me as this feed the dream to become a professional doodler! :)

Productive!

Hello everyone!
It's been a week of awesome productivity and play in my corner of the world :)
The easter long weekend was gorgeous - sunshine and spring all a bloom in Vancouver.  I admired blossoms, had the first ice cream cone of the season and visited the Van Dusen & UBC Botanical Gardens with loved ones for inspiration + delight.  Here are my happy feet a foot in the world :)
Picture
The blossoms were just GORGEOUS.  Here is a snapshot of my favorite magnolias!  At the UBC Botanical Gardens there are two trees in particular that must be 50 feet tall - they arch up into the sky and beyond their spray of pink all you can see is the ocean.  It's quite marvelous.

“It is spring again. The earth is like a child that knows poems by heart.” - Rilke
Please note that UBC has a huge collection of rhododendrons that are just beginning their blossom now - I love the way they are woven in with our West Coast evergreens and big ferns. Go see them!  They are a delightful combination. Victorian fancy + rain forest!

One of the best things of the week was being able to spend lots of time with my parents. They are super wonderful and hilarious.  Mommy Pham is a deal hound and we hunted down some goodies at a local thrift shop and shopped for groceries at 10% Discount Tuesdays at her favorite store ("Why would you ever pay full price?!?!?"- Mommy Pham wisdom).  Here's me trying my best to share Phamily dinner via pictures - my dad is an amazing cook; here's a sneak peek of his Vietnamese hot pot and fresh hot and sour soup.
Picture
All this has kept me much fed and watered as I have played away on computers and doodles.  My two major accomplishments at the end of this week are by Die Awesome facebook page which is a wonderful place to share and dialogue, a forthcoming Death Cafe (Vancouver's first!) and best of all, figuring out Mailchimp in order to send out my Very First Newsletter from www.joantrinhpham.com :)
Highlight:  A whole week to work + play
Lowlight:  A creeping realisation that I have no idea what I'm doing and that there is so much I don't know!
Conclusion:  None of this matters.  Keep playing, keep pursuing my passion and curiosity pausing for moments of stillness and appreciation.

Totally doable :D
Love much,

The Blog:
I created this blog for the purpose of sharing creative work related to death & dying. I hope that it will inspire resonant reflections and honest, courageous conversations about experiences related to death and dying.  I'm having so much fun with it and finding bits to share from all areas (music, poetry, graffiti, art, photography etc!). I'd be delighted if you had a look and shared - here's where contributions & collaborations are most excitedly and joyfully welcome!
